After completing our LCQ Online Course you will gain the License Controller Qualification (LCQ), needed when applying to get a Manager’s Certificate. A Duty Manager in any establishment that sells or supplies alcohol must have a Managers Certificate. This course will give you a good understanding of the law and host responsibility as related to the Sale and Supply of Alcohol Act 2012.

Our LCQ online course is perfect for anyone who wants to get qualified in the convenience of their own home or workplace, but still wants the benefits of the classroom environment. A chance to ask questions relevant to your workplace or clarify understanding.
These courses are delivered by expert tutors in an interactive environment through Zoom. You are also provided with a recording of the training session once it is finished.
The online LCQ course is delivered in one day and usually runs from 9:45am to 3:30pm. You have two weeks to complete the exam online whenever you are ready.
A computer is recommended, as the slides can be difficult to see on a smaller screen. A tablet or smart phone will also work.
Your registration email includes a link to download the Managers Guide, the answers to its revision questions, the workbook to fill out during the class, and the course slides.
COURSE PRICE: Choose the course option that suits you. Both options include the complete online course, qualification and GST. The price depends on whether you choose a PDF or printed copy of the Managers Guide:
Course with PDF Managers Guide — $220. Includes everything above and a downloadable PDF copy of the guide.
Course with printed Managers Guide — $250. Includes everything above, plus the 67-page Managers Guide as an A4 softcover book, couriered to you. Make notes and highlight important information as you go, then keep it as a reference for your Manager’s Certificate interview, certificate renewal and career in licensed premises.
LCQ Distance Learning Course
The Distance Learning Course is great for independent learners who prefer to study at their own pace, or can’t attend a classroom course. Also great for motivated people who need to get certified urgently.
As soon as we receive your payment we’ll email you access to the online course so you can get started straight away. In this email you will choose a study plan. There are three plans to choose from: Fastest, Steady and Easy.
Work through the five modules online, completing the topic quizzes as you go, using the online training videos and explanations. From within the course you can download the Managers Guide, the course slides and the answers to the manual revision questions. Once you have completed all topic quizzes, the online exam is automatically unlocked. You can then complete the exam when it suits you within two weeks.
A computer is recommended for the course and exam. A tablet or smart phone will also work, though a larger screen is easier to work with.
Choose how you would like to receive the Managers Guide:
- PDF only. $220, including qualification and GST. The Managers Guide and other resources are downloaded from within the course.
- Printed book couriered to you. $250, including postage. You also receive the Managers Guide as an A4 softcover book of 67 pages. The course is completed online, and the book is handy for revision during quiet periods at work when you have no computer access. Keep it as a handy reference for your Managers Certificate interview, your certificate renewal, and your career in licensed premises.
Course Content
This course covers the following 2 Unit Standards which make up the official Licence Controller Qualification:
- Unit Standard 4646 Demonstrate knowledge of the Sale and Supply of Alcohol Act and its implications for the operation of licensed premises
- Unit Standard 16705 Demonstrate knowledge of host responsibility requirements as a Duty Manager of licensed premises.
We are NZQA accredited and on completion you will be awarded with the official Licence Controller Qualification. This is a requirement for obtaining your Manager’s Certificate with the council.
During the course, the following topics will be covered:
- Legal requirements, offenses and penalties around serving alcohol
- Host Responsibility
- Duty manager and server responsibilities
- Creating a safe drinking environment
- How to identify intoxicated patrons and techniques for assessing their intoxication levels
- Server techniques of dealing with intoxicated patrons and maintaining customer and staff safety
- Application and renewal process for managers certificates
What happens once I register?
An automatic registration confirmation email is sent. (If you don’t receive this after a couple of minutes, your email address may have a typo) The email includes the following:
- Zoom Link, Date & Time Information or Distance Learning Information. Course access is sent manually once payment is received.
- What to get ready for the course
- A Tax Invoice for your records, near the bottom of the email. This shows the option you chose, either $220, or $250 with the printed Managers Guide.
- The cost of the course and bank account number to pay by Internet Banking is near the bottom in red writing. Or pay by credit card using the Payment button (Credit Card Fee applies).
If you chose the printed Managers Guide, it is couriered to you once payment is received.
